Measure, choose, build
Build and shelf-fit guide
How to measure your shelf, which kit suits your pace, and how to build it without forcing a single joint.
Measure the clear space
Take a few books out and measure the gap: clear width, depth and height, not the whole shelf. Internal lips and the backs of books eat into it. Allow 0.4 in (1 cm) above the kit and 0.8 in (2 cm) behind it for the battery switch.
Pick your pace
First build, about 2 to 3.5 hours: Count Cat's Study Book Nook, The Astrology Bookshop or Sakura Wine Alley Book Nook, which presses together with no glue.
Some practice, 4 to 7 hours: City Walk Florist and Bookshops, City Walk Street Shops, the Gear Ball Challenge Marble Run Kit and Round Door Garden Cottage.
Fine detail, 9 to 12 hours: Cyber City Book Nook, the Seahorse Barque Ship Model Kit and Sunshine Coffee Shop Book Nook.
Times are active building. Leave room for glue to dry.
Set up your table
Clear a table big enough to lay out the parts sheets. A shallow tray or a few small dishes stop little parts wandering. Work under a bright desk lamp: the kit's lights are for display, not for building by. Keep drinks on another surface.
Read before you release
Open the guide and check the inventory against the numbered sheets. Leave pieces in their sheets until a step needs them. If a part is held by a small tab, support it from behind and ease it out rather than bending it.
Dry-fit, then glue
Try each joint without glue first. If it is too tight, sand the edge lightly and try again; wood swells a little with humidity, and force breaks a delicate tab faster than you expect.
Apply PVA with a toothpick in a small bead: too much stains paper details. Let each subassembly set flat before you fix it to the walls.
Wooden kits: keep moving parts dry
Wooden kits are press-fit. Never glue a moving assembly unless the guide says so; glue can lock a gear. Rub a little wax on the marked contact points, candle wax or beeswax if your kit ships without any, and turn each gear train by hand before you close it into the frame.
Bring in the light
Test the LEDs with fresh batteries before you route the wire: most kits take 2 AAA, Round Door Garden Cottage takes 3 and Cyber City Book Nook 3 button cells. Follow the polarity markings, keep wires out of joints and remove the batteries before adjusting anything. No soldering is needed. Leave the switch and battery case where you can reach them.
Stop at a good point
Finish a complete step, put loose parts in a labeled tray, cap the glue and note where you are. A kit that is easy to come back to stays a pleasure.
Selecting your kit
Explore our collections of book nook kits, miniature house kits, and wooden gear kits. Each style features different construction methods, ranging from glue-assembled rooms to moving press-fit mechanisms.
Logical steps for assembly
Working in a clear sequence keeps components aligned and prevents mistakes during construction:
- Assemble internal accessories first, such as tiny books, lamps, and furniture, then allow each piece to dry thoroughly.
- Fix printed wall coverings and paper trims in place while structural panels rest flat on your work surface.
- Thread the lighting cables along interior corners, securing leads before mounting outer side walls.
- Keep a damp cotton bud nearby to lift away stray PVA glue before it touches printed artwork.
Fitting and shelf care
When sliding a finished model onto a bookshelf, hold the main load-bearing panels rather than decorative front moldings. Ensure the battery compartment sits where you can reach it without pinching cables against the shelf back.
To keep the display clean over time, dust the interior gently with a dry, soft brush. Avoid using liquid sprays or cleaning products on the paper elements and wooden joints.

Questions
How do I measure my shelf for a book nook?
Measure the clear width, depth and height of the gap between your books, then allow 0.4 in (1 cm) above the kit and 0.8 in (2 cm) behind it.
What if a joint is too tight?
Do not force it. Sand the edge lightly, dry-fit again and repeat only as needed.
