A Japanese side street
Sakura Wine Alley packs a whole lane into the width of a few books. A sake and wine shop with stacked crates and paper lanterns faces a small noodle counter, with hanging signs, a potted plant by the step and a branch of pink cherry blossom reaching across. The outside of the case is white with a soft printed pattern, so it sits quietly on the shelf until the lights come on.
Size
It measures about 4.4 in wide, 7.7 in deep and 8.7 in tall (11.1 x 19.5 x 22.1 cm). Check the depth of your shelf: at 7.7 in (19.5 cm) it suits most bookcases, with a little room behind for the battery switch.
The build
This is an easy, satisfying first book nook. The 249 pieces are pre-cut and press-fit, so you need no glue and no paint. Follow the illustrated guide, press each piece out of its sheet and slot it home. Plan on about 3.5 hours.
The case goes together first, then the shop fronts, then the small props that make the scene: bottles, crates, lanterns and signs. Press-fit parts can be eased apart if you put one in the wrong place, which makes this kit very forgiving. Stop at any natural point and carry on another evening.
The light
Three warm lights, an overhead lamp, a red lantern and a table light, are pre-wired to a touch switch. It runs on 2 AAA batteries, not included. No soldering. Test the light before you close up the case, while the wires are still easy to reach. At night the lanterns throw a warm red glow down the lane and onto the books on either side.
Who it suits
Anyone who loves Japanese streets, travel or cherry blossom season, and builders who want a kit that looks rich without days of work. It makes a thoughtful gift for a reader with a full bookcase, and a calm evening project for two.
Care
Keep it out of direct sun and dust it with a soft brush. If a press-fit part ever works loose, a gentle push sets it back in place. Take the batteries out if you store it for a while.
