A cafe in a glasshouse
The Sunshine Coffee Shop sits inside a tall white frame shaped like a garden conservatory, with arched windows on every side. Inside there are two levels: a coffee bar with a grinder, an espresso machine and cups along the counter, and a stair up to a small seating area. A blossom tree, a parasol and potted flowers bring the garden in.
Size
Built, it is about 4.3 in wide, 7.1 in deep and 9.1 in tall (11 x 18 x 23 cm). The narrow white frame slots in between books and catches the eye even when the lights are off.
The build
This is a kit for patient hands. It comes as pre-cut wood sheets with printed paper parts, a warm LED set and an illustrated guide. The frame goes up in an evening; the fine furniture and the many small cafe props take most of the time. Plan on about 12 hours spread over several evenings.
You will need craft glue that dries clear, fine tweezers, a small ruler and scissors. Dry-fit the frame before gluing so the arches line up, and paint or glue small parts on a scrap of card so they do not stick to the table. Stop at any natural point and carry on another evening.
The light
Warm LEDs light the cafe from inside. They are pre-wired to a battery box that takes 2 AAA batteries, not included. There is no soldering. With the lights on, the white arches glow and the counter shines like a real cafe after closing time.
Who it suits
Coffee lovers, anyone who spends their weekends in cafes with a book, and builders ready for a step up from a first kit. It is a striking piece on a white or pale shelf, and a lovely gift for a friend who already has a bookcase full of reads.
Display tips
Place it at eye level so you can see both floors. The white frame suits light wood and white shelves; on a dark shelf it stands out like a lantern.
Questions
How long does the Sunshine Coffee Shop take to build?
About 12 hours for most builders, spread over a few evenings. The frame goes up quickly; the cafe furniture and props take most of the time.
Will it fit between my books?
It is about 4.3 in (11 cm) wide, 7.1 in (18 cm) deep and 9.1 in (23 cm) tall. Measure the clear height of your shelf and leave a little room behind for the switch.
What do I need to add?
Craft glue that dries clear, fine tweezers, a small ruler, scissors and 2 AAA batteries. None of them are in the kit.
Is it suitable for beginners?
It is better as a second kit. The parts are small and there are many of them, but the guide is clear, and a patient first-timer can finish it.
