A sailing ship in black and gold

The Seahorse Barque is a three-masted ship in the style of the old ocean-going barques, finished in black with gold details. Its 13 sails are black with gold seahorse emblems: square sails on the masts and fore-and-aft sails at the bow and stern. A golden seahorse leads at the bow, and the stern rises into a tall, carved castle with windows and lanterns. Seen side on, it has the look of a ship from an old sea chart, which is exactly why it suits a study, an office or a shelf of adventure novels.

What moves

This is a display model first, but a few parts still move. The helm turns. Move the small boat on deck and the gun ports along the hull open to show the row of cannons behind them, then close again when you move it back. It is a small detail you can show to every guest who stops at the shelf.

Size

Built, it measures about 18.5 in long, 7.1 in deep and 15.4 in tall (47 x 18 x 39 cm), at 1:100 scale. That is a big model for a small footprint: it needs a shelf or a mantel at least 7.5 in (19 cm) deep, and room above it for the masts. It looks best at eye level, where you can see along the deck.

The build

The 603 pieces come laser-cut on numbered plywood sheets, with the printed sails. You press the parts out by hand and fit them together, following the printed manual step by step. There is no glue and no paint: the joints are cut to hold by friction, and the black and gold finish comes on the parts.

Plan on about 10 hours over several evenings. ROKR rates it among its harder kits, mostly because the masts, yards and deck rails are made of thin parts. Press each piece out slowly and support it on both sides, test the fit before you push it home, and keep the sheets in numbered order so nothing goes missing. Stop at any natural point and carry on another evening.

What you add

A craft knife helps free a stubborn piece from its sheet without bending it. If the helm turns stiffly, rub a little wax on its axle; a candle stub or a bit of beeswax works, since wax doesn't ship in every box. Never glue a moving part, or the gun ports will stay shut for good.

Who it suits

Readers of sea stories and history, model builders who want a showpiece, and anyone who likes the look of an old ship on the shelf. It makes a strong gift for a patient builder with a free weekend, and a good next step after a first wooden kit.

Care and display

Keep it out of direct sun and damp, which can warp thin plywood. Dust it with a soft, dry brush, working down from the tops of the masts. Lift it by the hull, never by the masts or sails.

Questions

How big is the Seahorse Barque?

About 18.5 in long, 7.1 in deep and 15.4 in tall (47 x 18 x 39 cm), at 1:100 scale. Give it a shelf at least 7.5 in (19 cm) deep, with room above for the masts.

How long does it take to build?

About 10 hours for most builders, over several evenings. It is one of the harder ROKR kits, mostly because the masts and deck rails are thin parts.

Do I need glue or paint?

No. All 603 pieces press-fit together, and the black and gold finish comes on the parts, so there is nothing to glue or paint.

What moves on the finished ship?

The helm turns, and moving the small boat on deck opens the gun ports along the hull to show the cannons. Moving it back closes them again.
