What this miniature house kit is

The Hearthlight Miniature House Kit is a build-it-yourself room in miniature. You get laser-cut parts sheets, a dust cover and instructions in the box. The parts come in wood, paper, fabric and plastic. Some parts press together and some need glue, so keep a craft glue on hand before you start.

This is a kit only. It arrives as flat parts sheets, not as a finished house. You cut the parts free, fit them, and build the room piece by piece. The work is quiet and hands-on, and the result is a small scene you can set on a shelf, a desk or a windowsill.

Size and scale

The built size is 3.5 x 3.5 x 4.5 in (9 x 9 x 11.5 cm). That is small enough to sit on a bookshelf next to your books, and tall enough to read as a real room. Here are the numbers in one place.

Measurement Inches Metric
Width 3.5 in 9 cm
Depth 3.5 in 9 cm
Height 4.5 in 11.5 cm

Because the footprint is about the size of a coaster, you do not need a large work surface. A tray or a cutting mat keeps the small parts together while you build.

How to build it

Set out your parts sheets and read the instructions first. The steps run in order, and a quick read through saves time later.

  1. Clear a flat, well-lit table. Small parts are easier to handle on a clean surface.
  2. Punch out or cut the laser-cut parts as the instructions direct. Keep the sheets flat until you need each part.
  3. Dry-fit before you glue. Many parts press together, and a dry fit shows you how they meet.
  4. Glue only the parts that need it. A thin line of glue holds better than a heavy bead.
  5. Let each glued step set before you move on to the next one.
  6. Place the dust cover over the finished house to keep dust off the small details.

Take your time. This is a slow build, not a race, and the small steps are the point.

Where to put it and how to care for it

Set the finished house on a shelf, a desk, a nightstand or a mantel. Keep it out of direct sun so the paper and fabric parts hold their color. Keep it away from damp rooms and open windows.

To clean it, use a soft dry brush or a dry cloth. Do not use water or spray cleaner on the paper and fabric parts. The dust cover does most of the work for you. If a part comes loose, a small dot of glue puts it back.

This kit is for ages 14 and up. It has small parts, so keep it away from younger children and pets. Store leftover parts and glue out of reach when you are done for the day.
